PACCAR Incorporated has issued a safety recall for certain 2023-2024 Peterbilt and Kenworth truck models due to a defect in the throttle pedal assembly. The recall affects approximately 1,101 vehicles and stems from an issue with an oversized magnet carrier in the throttle pedal, which could cause it to bind or fail to return to idle, posing a potential safety risk.

The recall includes Peterbilt models 535, 536, 537, and 548, along with Kenworth models T180, T280, T380, and T480. The defect, identified in vehicles produced between August 18, 2022, and May 8, 2023, could increase the risk of accidents if the throttle pedal does not operate correctly. While application of the service brake can override the condition, PACCAR has acknowledged the need for corrective action. The issue arises from problems with the molding process of the magnet carrier, which acts as a pivot for the throttle pedal, potentially exacerbated by fluid exposure.
PACCAR began monitoring warranty claims in late August 2024 after receiving reports from its supplier, Orscheln, regarding the issue. By January 2025, five warranty claims related to the defect had been documented, but no injuries, fatalities, or field reports were associated with the problem. After a detailed review, PACCAR’s safety committee determined the defect to be a safety risk, prompting the recall.

The company has outlined a remedy program where dealers will inspect and replace defective throttle pedal assemblies at no cost to vehicle owners. PACCAR has also arranged for reimbursement for prior repairs related to the issue, as outlined in its general reimbursement plan. The corrected components feature a magnet carrier manufactured after December 14, 2022, following a fix to the molding tool. Notification letters to affected dealers and owners are scheduled to be sent by March 17, 2025.
This recall emphasizes the importance of addressing potential safety concerns in commercial vehicles to ensure the well-being of operators and other road users.
