The Borough of Chambersburg has announced plans to inspect sidewalks for compliance with snow and ice removal regulations. This effort aims to ensure the safety of pedestrians, particularly schoolchildren, following a recent winter storm. Local regulations require sidewalks along street rights-of-way to be cleared of snow and ice within 24 hours after a storm, with the recent deadline being 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.

On Thursday, January 9, 2025, borough representatives will begin inspecting sidewalks to confirm adherence to the policy. Property owners who fail to comply will be issued tickets, with fines starting at $50 for a first offense. Repeat violations within a 12-month period will result in fines of $100. Non-payment of fines may lead to formal charges filed with the Magisterial District Judge.
The inspections will focus exclusively on sidewalks located within the street rights-of-way. Residents uncertain about these areas are encouraged to consult the Borough’s street map, available on its official website. Borough officials advise anyone with questions to contact Chuck Nipe, Director of Public Works, at 717-251-2496 or via email at cnipe@chambersburgpa.gov.
