The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. and was quickly brought under control by the Bowling Green Volunteer Fire Department within five minutes of their arrival. Seven firefighters responded to the scene after a single alarm was raised.

One inmate sustained third-degree burns and was airlifted to Johns Hopkins Burn Center for treatment. Additionally, five correctional officers were evaluated at UPMC Western Maryland for injuries related to the incident. The total damage to the prison cell is estimated at $500. The smoke alarm activated as expected, but the sprinkler system did not engage due to the location of the fire.
